From the academy to his hospital bed, Tyler Moldovan’s best friend and fellow Phoenix Police officer is right by his side.

E153 attended the candlelight vigil for Officer Moldovan and his family tonight. It was an incredible display of love from our community. To stand side by side in support of the family as they endure the unthinkable is a privilege. Phoenix Police Officer Tyler Moldovan remains on life support in the hospital Thursday after being shot in the line of duty early Tuesday morning. Family friends said they are hoping a miracle might save his life. "He was the perfect child," Cornel Avram, pastor at the Happy Valley Romanian Pentecostal Church, said.

"Tyler is an all-American kid,” Claud Olar, a church member, said. “Very well behaved, hard-working. He's the son you want to have.” Moldovan's father is the church's treasurer. A family and community watched Moldovan grow up, first serving God and then the community.

In March, the 22-year-old became a Phoenix police officer. This May, he became a husband. However, on Tuesday he would be shot 8 times while checking out reports of cars driving erratically near 15th Avenue and Camelback.

”I saw him on Sunday night and to hear about it Tuesday morning...it was a total shock,” Olar said. Friday, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association will hold a fundraiser to support the family. The event will take place at PLEA headquarters from 10 am to 10 pm. All donations will go towards the family.

A 22-year-old Phoenix police officer was fighting for his life Tuesday after he was shot multiple times during an early morning investigation.
Essa Williams, 24, is the shooting suspect and has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Officers just before 2 a.m. were investigating vehicles driving erratically near 19th Avenue and Camelback Road, said Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Vincent Cole on Tuesday afternoon. Cole said a sedan had been "doing donuts" near 21st Avenue and Hazelwood Street.
Officers later found a sedan matching the description of one of the vehicles parked at an apartment complex near 15th Avenue and Camelback Road. No one was in the sedan at the time.

As officers searched the area, Officer Tyler Moldovan found Williams hiding behind a short wall of an apartment patio and began giving him commands, according to a police news release. Williams then began shooting at Moldovan with a handgun multiple times, police said.
Additional officers at the scene heard gunfire, went to the area and were able to take Williams into custody. No officers fired their weapons, officials said.

It was not immediately clear if Williams was one of the people suspected of driving erratically, Cole said. Phoenix police are reviewing Moldovan's body camera video.
Williams was booked into a Maricopa County jail on multiple charges: attempted first-degree murder, prohibited possession of a weapon and resisting arrest, according to police.
Williams has previously served time in prison for theft, aggravated assault and armed robbery committed in 2014 and 2015, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections website. He was released from prison in April 2020, the website stated.

Meanwhile, Moldovan was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, where police said he was "fighting for his life." The hospital's staff was “doing everything possible they can to save him," police Chief Jeri Williams said during a news conference Tuesday. “Tyler is doing exactly what we expect our police officers to do and that is to continue to fight.”

Moldovan graduated from the Phoenix Regional Police Academy in March and recently became a solo officer, Williams said. He is married and his parents and brother also live in Arizona.
Moldovan, who has worked at the department for more than a year, celebrated his 22nd birthday last month, she added. "He is married, and is loved by his wife, parents, brother and extended family," said Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Ann Justus.

Gov. Doug Ducey tweeted: "Arizona is pulling for Officer Tyler Moldovan and our prayers are with his family and loved ones. Law enforcement professionals put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, and this terrible shooting is another example of the danger they face to keep us safe." The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to "piece together the remaining details of this shooting," police said.
